Rough Profiling the Neck Shaft
   
Temporarily rigging the neck billet in the profiling fixture
   
I will bandsaw close to this pencil line
   
Now the cutterhead has a minimal amount of stock to remove--both safer and less wear on the tooling
   
This step defines the final surface of the neck profile. Notice the adjustable plate for the ducktail cut--necessary for different style necks and thickness
After all the wood has been removed and the stresses relieved, I check for perpendicularity of the tenon to the fretboard "bed". This is critical for a perfect fretboard/soundboard junction 
   
The stress relief in the neckshaft has allowed things to move (as I always expect). Here I am making the final fine-tuning of the shaft. This is why we mill the neck in stages--to allow the wood to move all that it wants; then we adjust as necessary
