Rough Ducktail on Shaper |
|
|
|
|
Here is the rig to trace the
ducktail to bandsaw the excess wood. This is the very fixture I will
use to mill the ducktail on the shaper |

One of the few times I use a
pencil to layout anything. This was one of the most difficult parts
of the guitar to design--where the ducktail transitions into the
neckshaft below the first fret. |

|
The ducktail after it has been
milled on the shaper. Notice the little apex where the ducktail will
transition. This point must change when the neck thickness changes.
But this is compensated for in that other fixture. |

Here is the neckshaft being
milled. The direction of the cutterhead is critical. Early in my
luthierie career I guessed wrongly and the shaft rocketed 40 feet
across the shop in 3 pieces. I'm not making this up. Statistically
the table saw is more dangerous. But for my money, this is the tool
for which I have the most respect. |
