I have been
saving this particular set of Brazilian for years,
awaiting the perfect soundboard to complement the
set. I found the soundboard set this spring when a
great friend and builder,
Peter Marreiros,
brought me a set of old-growth redwood from a log
which had been submerged in a lake or river for
many, many years. The edges of the log had taken a
natural darkening as the alpine waters had seeped
into the wood for many years. But the log was
salvaged before the darkening had made it all the
way to the center of the tree. So I decided to join
the top so that the dark and rich patina on each
half of the set was oriented to the outside with the
pristine and glowing redwood left at the center,
creating a natural “burst” effect which we call a
moonburst or moonglow. The Brazilian set itself was
a type of Brazilian I call Ghost Brazilian or Ghost
Flame Brazilian. This is Brazilian with subtle and
broad luminous flames on the sides (and, to a
degree, on the back) that simply dance, shimmer and
glow in the shifting light. I have never seen any
set like this. When I saw the special set of
redwood, the entire project just emerged in a
heartbeat. I designed a new inlay for the headstock
and fretboard that I call the Ghost Inlay and used
Black Tahitian Pearl and Gold Mother-of-Pearl for
the fretboard and all the other inlays on the
guitar. These inlays include Black/Gold pearl
Micropearl on the fretboard, headstock and rosette;
Black pearl inlays around the soundboard, sides and
back; black pearl logo on the rare Snakewood
headstock plate; black and gold micropearl inlays on
the truss rod cover, Black chrome super 510s, etc..)
